A  major  achievement  of  the department is the commercialisation of the

technology  developed  for  the  rapid  detection  of  shrimp  viruses. This

technology,  developed  with  funding   support  from  Department   of

Biotechnology, Government of India enables sensitive on specific detection

of both White Spot Syndrome Virus (WSSV) and Monodon baculovirus (MBV)

in  one  test.  This technology is based on the principle of Polymerase Chain

Reaction (PCR). Mangalore   Biotech Laboratory has taken up the technology

and has released  the product into the market.

PCR Kit

Another technology that has been commercialized is for the production of immunostimulant for shrimp

using bacterial and yeast products. This is being marketed under the brand name "Aquastim". The

Department has also developed technology for

                 -  Biocontrol of luminous bacteria in hatcheries using bacteriophages

                 -  Rapid detection of luminous Vibrio harveyi in shrimp larvae using PCR

Other technologies that are close to commercialization are:

            - Rapid detection of seafood borne pathogens such as Salmonella, Vibrio cholerae, Vibrio vulnificus

and Vibrio parahaemolyticus using DNA colony hybridization

            - PCR based detection of Salmonella, Vibrio parahaemolyticus and  toxigenic Vibrio  cholerae

The  Department  has  played  a  central  role  in  dissemination  of  PCR   diagnostic  technique in

aquaculture sector  in  India. Having  developed PCR  based  diagnostic training  was organized for

officers  of  Marine  Products  Export  Development  Authority ( MPEDA ),  Ministry  of  Commerce,

Government  of  India, Officers  of  State Departments  of  Fisheries of  Andhra  and  helped  them

          to set  up  PCR  laboratories.

UNESCO  has  recognized  the  Department  of  Fishery Microbiology as  MIRCEN (Microbial Resources

Centre ) for  Marine  Biotechnology.  The  Department  has  been recognized  as  a center for training

         and research  in  this  area.
