 RAFI AHMED KIDWAI AWARD

        

         The Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) has bestowed  Dr. I. Karunasagar, Director of  Research,

  Karnataka Veterinary, Animal and Fisheries Sciences University (KVAFSU) with the highly prestigious Rafi Ahmed

  Kidwai Award. This award,  is given once every  two years  to any scientist who has made outstanding research

  contributions in the field of fisheries, aquatic sciences and public health microbiology. The award  consisted of  a

  Gold medal, citation and cash prize of Rs. 3.0 lakhs.  Dr. I. Karunasagar received  this award from the  Honurable

  Union Minister for Agriculture, Shri Sharad Pawar on July 16th, 2005 at  a function held  at National  Agricultural

  Science  Complex,  New  Delhi.  According to the citation, the award  has  been   given  to   Dr. I. Karunasagar in

  recognition of his research that has led to improvement in fish and shrimp health management and assessment

  of food safety.   

         Dr. Karunasagar’s research has  led to the development of technology for rapid detection of shrimp viruses

  and public health related pathogens like Salmonella, Vibrio cholerae, Vibrio parahaemolyticus and Vibrio vulnificus.

  Technology  developed for the rapid  detection of  toxic  algae responsible for  paralytic shellfish  poisoning  has

  potential application in monitoring shellfish like clams, mussels,  oysters  and  ensuring  their  safety  for  human

  consumption.        

 

NATIONAL TECHNOLOGY AWARD

     Dr. Karunasagar has been conferred with this award in recognition of his outstanding contribution in the

     area  of Biotechnology. He is credited with the National Technology Award for developing a technology for 

     simultaneous detection of two major shrimp viruses, white spot syndrome virus and monodon baculovirus,

     by DNA based technique named "COMBI KIT- WSSV, MBV". This  technology  has  been  commercialised and 

     Mangalore Biotech laboratory a reputed medical and veterinary diagnostic house, is  presently  marketing  

     the kit both in India and abroad. This technology is highly useful for shrimp hatcheries and farmers to  screen

     the brood stock and larvae and use only virus free animals in aquaculture. This technology is being  used in

     diagnostic laboratories both in India and abroad. The technology awards consists of a plaque,  citation and a

     cash prize.
