The    Bioinformatics   Center, at   the   Department  of  Fishery   Microbiology,  College  of   Fisheries   is

one   of  the  Distributed   Information  Subcentre (Sub-DIC)   set  up   with  financial   support  from  the

Department of  Biotechnology, Government of India. The Center was established in 2000.  The Centre is

actively involved in carrying out research, preparing databases and conducting training programmes in

    the  area of Aquatic bioinformatics.

Some of the research areas include:

    - Analysis of genome of viruses for repeat regions useful in understanding the structural properties,

functional effects, evolutionary relationships and in molecular typing.

    - Modelling the structure of outermembrane proteins of Aeromonas hydrophila and  application of

       bioinformatics in vaccine development.

    - Analysis of virulence genes of Vibrio spp.

    - Studies on gene expression and development of EST Bank in the tiger shrimp Penaeus monodon

The  centre  conducts  training  programme in bioinformatics  and  also  provides  bioinformatics

       support to neighbouring scientific institutions.

database on  "The complete  genome and proteins

of whitespot syndrome virus" was released on 27th

September, 2001, by Prof.H.P.C.Shetty. This database

has been updated to include latest genomic and

     proteomic information on WSSV.

Databases on genome of following organisms is

     being made :

      - WSSV

       - The cultured shrimp Penaeus monodon

     - The fish pathogen Aeromonas hydrophila

     - The fish borne bacterial pathogen Vibrio parahaemolyticus

     - The Indian tiger shrimp Penaeus monodon

     - Antibiotic residues in shrimp

     - Genomics of Vibrio vulnificus

Four National training programmes were organised:
